Written by John Barnett on December 9, 2009 – 3:21 am

With college costs increasing at a hefty 6.5% every year, it just might pay to look into yet another way to augment student loans, grants and financial aid – the athletic scholarship. There’s a whopping $1.2 billion available for collegiate sports scholarships every year. Since the average cost of attending a four-year public university is nearly $80,000 every little bit helps, right? Here are a few things every high school athlete should know as they get started on their college selection process:

1. Go straight to college after high school graduation. 2. There are 29 sports recognized by the NCAA (National College Athletic Association) The women’s list is a little longer and includes: Archery, Water Polo, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Track & Field (Indoor and Outdoor), Cross Country, Tennis, Equestrian, Fencing, Synchronized Swimming, Swimming and Diving, Field Hockey, Golf, Squash, Softball, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Skiing (Cross Country and Downhill), Rowing and Rifle.

Homeschool Record Keeping and Transcripts Are Critical For College Scholarships

Outstanding Homeschool Student Loses Out on Scholarship – No GPA – Parent Cries

Your child’s future and your financial future depend on how well you keep your homeschool records and transcripts. There is ongoing discussion in homeschool circles about the importance of maintaining records, grades and transcripts for each student.

Rather than tell you my opinion, I want to tell you a story …

Joel had been a homeschool student since kindergarten. He was an exceptional student, with a passion for learning, an incredible ability to reason, and a real gift for writing. Unfortunately, his parents had attended a homeschool convention when he was still in middle school and were informed that grades are not important on a homeschool transcript. In fact, “they could simply choose to use a pass/fail system” for his transcript rather than grading each assignment. That sounded so much easier than maintaining grades for their homeschooled children!

When they decided to homeschool without worrying about grades, they had no idea that grades are significant when it comes to scholarship funding!

College Scholarships: Bridging The Gap

Written by funker on October 10, 2009 – 3:17 pm

In pursuing education, particularly of obtaining a college degree after high school is very important for a successful career in life. A college education today is such a need for any young adult. For a chosen degree to take, you must be prepared for the expenses it will consume for the years to come.

It found out that if someone finishes a college degree it will earn nearly twice as much throughout a lifetime as compared to someone with only a high school diploma. Incidentally, in rising costs of education each year, many high school graduates cannot take nor continue their preferred courses in college.

The number one reason why many students are forced to drop out or not taking college anymore is lack of money. For this unavoidable situation many students in large part of the population that cannot take a college degree are left behind and end up looking for jobs just to support their college education. Some are experiencing emotional stress because they think they are just a burden to their family. For this part college scholarships are the answer.

Are You Looking for a College Scholarship?

Written by funker on October 8, 2009 – 3:20 pm

If you are trying to put together a funding package for college then a college scholarship should be top of your list since this is money which you do not have to repay.

Scholarships come in all shapes and sizes and are not simply for academic high-flyers or students with exceptional sporting talents, but are available to just about everyone in any circumstances from children from specific geographic locations to the children of local widows. The big problem with scholarships is simply finding them.

Now it is true that the majority of scholarships are aimed at academic high-flyers with good grades but this is often simply the starting point for selection and, in order to beat others competing for these scholarships with similar grade point averages and SAT scores, you will often need to produce something else to set yourself apart such as an award or achievement or a record of community service.

At this point it is therefore often a good idea to talk to your school counselor who should be able to point you in the right direction. However, do not simply take his or her word for it and, armed with the basic information which they provide, hop onto your computer and search around yourself for the latest up-to-date information.
