San Diego Schools Embrace the No Child Left Behind Program

Written by funker on August 23, 2010 – 3:18 pm

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) program is a federal law that governs elementary and secondary education and is funded by Federal Title I. Under the NCLB, school boards must ensure that their high poverty schools meet the educational needs of low-achieving students. The goal is to close the achievement gap between the high and low-performing students.

San Diego Schools are committed to delivering strong standards-based education with programs that are designed to improve student achievement in the gateway skills of reading, writing and mathematics. Along with this commitment, they have embraced the NCLB program, which benefits the San Diego schools and its students as follows:

• San Diego schools must provide greater accountability for results, which means an even better school district with higher scholastic achievement from its students;
• The district gains greater flexibility for spending federal money, allowing them to decide where the money best serves to improve student achievement;
• Parents have more options over their children, allowing them to choose a non-participating school over a NCLB school; and
• San Diego schools gain an increased emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven to work.

New York Schools Announce 228 High Schools in Need of Improvement

Written by funker on August 8, 2010 – 3:17 pm

Of the 946 high schools within the New York schools, 228 have been identified as needing improvement under federal and state rules, according to an announcement made in mid-September by the New York schools.

All schools within the New York schools are held accountable for the academic achievement of students by race and ethnic groups, students with disabilities, students with limited English proficiency, and low-income students. They are graded at the end of each school year by the New York schools, according to their grading standards as well as federal rules.

Of the 228 high schools, 18 were newly identified this year. Twenty-nine high schools met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years in all areas previously identified as needing improvement and were removed from the list this year. Seventy-five made AYP last year and, if they make AYP this school year, they will be removed from the list next year. Though many of the New York schools on the list last year have raised their AYP scores, the number of high schools on the list only decreased statewide by eleven.

Baltimore Schools Designate Six Schools As Persistently Dangerous With a Warning to Another

Written by funker on June 18, 2010 – 3:18 pm

The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act requires that all states report any schools that are considered persistently dangerous. The state of Maryland is only one of six states that have reported having such schools. Some metro areas with similar or worse problems report no dangerous schools at all.

Since each state sets its own suspension limits for reporting, the NCLB provision is inconsistent across the nation with many states ignoring it all together. The state of Maryland, however, takes it seriously with rules that are more stringent than most other states.

A “persistently dangerous” school designation means the school has a high rate of suspensions for serious offenses. These are violations of assault on another student or teacher, bringing a weapon to school, setting a fire at school, or sexual assault of any type.

The six schools designated as dangerous by the Baltimore schools are:

• Calverton, Thurgood Marshall, and Highlandtown Middle Schools — These schools have been considered dangerous by state standards for the past four years, with Highlandtown closing before the fall of 2006.
• Liberal Arts at Walbrook, Dr. Roland N. Patterson Sr. Academy, and Dr. W.E.B. Dubois High School were all added this year.

Why Voting No on the Minneapolis School Referendum is a Vote for Minneapolis School Children

Written by funker on June 2, 2010 – 3:17 pm

No Administrator Left Behind!

What happens if the Minneapolis school funding referendum fails this election?  What happens is the voters will be asked to approve it next year in November 2009 (when we vote in Minneapolis City Council elections). The Minneapolis School Board and referendum supporters have stated that if the Referendum fails this year, nothing “bad” will happen. This Referendum will have no effect on school funding in Minneapolis, for this year (2008-2009 school year) or next year (2009-2010 school year). It only affects school funding starting in 2010-2011.

Why should people who support children and Minneapolis public schools vote NO on the Referendum this year? Because they believe that the children of Minneapolis deserve better than the current referendum proposal. The current referendum is flawed and incomplete. Working together the Minneapolis School Board, school administration and teachers union can do and should do much better for Minneapolis school children, than the current Referendum proposal.  The District needs to be much more specific about the actions steps it will take to achieve its stated goals, which I agree with.  Below are the things I want to know and I think all voters should know made before we support a referendum. Unfortunately, the only way to gets this information is for us to vote NO this year.   By voting NO we send a message to Minneapolis School Board, school administration and teachers union that they can do much better than the current Referendum proposal for Minneapolis school children.

Self Improvement – Let The Print News Talk!

Written by funker on October 11, 2009 – 3:20 pm

Many people are of the opinion that developing oneself is far from easy. Troubles and impediments regarding the complete process start with the self since there is opposition frequently.

This opposition is quite on the lines of wearing a worn out pair of shoes on a regular basis. Even though the shoes appear old one does not give up wearing them, as they are quite comfortable. This person is apprehensive that if tries on a new pair, his feet may possibly start to ache. The same is the case with self-improvement. For instance, a person could be nervous of changing his behavior as it may lead to further problems.

Nonetheless, one should never be left behind, without any kind of advancement, in the same way as the person who cannot continue to use the very same worn out pair of shoes always. At particular events, those used pair of shoes would not be the right choice. Viewpoints and comportment that constitute a present self under present conditions may be quite improper in the near future. Therefore, self-improvement and change are unavoidable, regardless of how complicated the process turns out.

College Scholarships: Bridging The Gap

Written by funker on October 10, 2009 – 3:17 pm

In pursuing education, particularly of obtaining a college degree after high school is very important for a successful career in life. A college education today is such a need for any young adult. For a chosen degree to take, you must be prepared for the expenses it will consume for the years to come.

It found out that if someone finishes a college degree it will earn nearly twice as much throughout a lifetime as compared to someone with only a high school diploma. Incidentally, in rising costs of education each year, many high school graduates cannot take nor continue their preferred courses in college.

The number one reason why many students are forced to drop out or not taking college anymore is lack of money. For this unavoidable situation many students in large part of the population that cannot take a college degree are left behind and end up looking for jobs just to support their college education. Some are experiencing emotional stress because they think they are just a burden to their family. For this part college scholarships are the answer.

Self Improvement – Courses To Change Your Life!

Written by funker on October 9, 2009 – 3:20 pm

Without a doubt, every person wishes to be a good human being. Nobody would wish to be left behind, without any possibility of growth, whether one owns up to it or not. Now, self-improvement is perceived by a vast majority of people as a continuous goal that should not be broken off on arriving at a particular landmark.

Self-improvement starts with an acknowledgement of one’s imperfections and shortcomings. First, a person should realize that he requires developing and becoming a better individual with time. After that, he has to decide that something should be seriously done. Without acquiescence and determination, self-improvement cannot possibly take place. But, usually, the problem concerns the initial two steps.

Courses concerned with self-improvement will definitely benefit you considerably since they usually deal with how no one is excused from the likelihood of changing or developing to become a better person. They depict true-life situations, which can appreciably motivate other people. These courses tend to create the feeling that it is far from being a disapproving attribute to be requiring self-improvement since it is one of life’s fundamental desires. It should not be construed as a sign of failing or limitation.
