San Diego Schools Embrace the No Child Left Behind Program

Written by funker on August 23, 2010 – 3:18 pm

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) program is a federal law that governs elementary and secondary education and is funded by Federal Title I. Under the NCLB, school boards must ensure that their high poverty schools meet the educational needs of low-achieving students. The goal is to close the achievement gap between the high and low-performing students.

San Diego Schools are committed to delivering strong standards-based education with programs that are designed to improve student achievement in the gateway skills of reading, writing and mathematics. Along with this commitment, they have embraced the NCLB program, which benefits the San Diego schools and its students as follows:

• San Diego schools must provide greater accountability for results, which means an even better school district with higher scholastic achievement from its students;
• The district gains greater flexibility for spending federal money, allowing them to decide where the money best serves to improve student achievement;
• Parents have more options over their children, allowing them to choose a non-participating school over a NCLB school; and
• San Diego schools gain an increased emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven to work.

New York Schools Plan for the Future

Written by funker on August 2, 2010 – 3:17 pm

New York Schools encompass two different worlds: New York City and New York State. Assessments of the two are generally separate since the thriving metropolis of New York City is a different world from the New York Schools that make up the rest of this rural and suburban state.

Johanna Duncan-Poitier, recently named senior Deputy Commissioner of Education

P-16, recently revealed the Board of Regent’s plan for the New York Schools outside of the city limits. While these New York Schools retain a national reputation for excellence, they still face challenges in educating the vast and diverse students in its many districts. Duncan-Poitier announced an unprecedented $1.7 billion budget that New York Schools will use to improve graduation rates, raise learning standards and increase accountability.

Among the issues that New York Schools are dealing with are: charter schools, time for instruction and inequity in learning. The last, a learning imbalance, seems to occur during the middle school years. 70% of New York Schools’ fourth grade students passed the reading and writing exams, while only 48% of eighth graders passed. This challenge is compounded by the gap black and Hispanic children face in reaching similar achievement goals.

Incidentally, in rising costs of education each year, many high school graduates cannot take nor continue their preferred courses in college.

The number one reason why many students are forced to drop out or not taking college anymore is lack of money. Some are experiencing emotional stress because they think they are just a burden to their family. For this part college scholarships are the answer.
