Learning the meaning of business processes is absolutely necessary for improving these processes, and to significantly improve business performance in any way – in every business. Process Mapping is required for this learning curve, and in every business where this task is performed, the time invested will make obvious that few if any individuals working within the business actually understand the complete scope of the functioning of the organisation as it is being managed.

When our business first engaged with clients to introduce Quality Management systems (ISO9001) it was common to advise clients to ’say what you do’ – ‘do what you say’. This theory was fine so long as those defining (saying) what was to be done actually knew what should happen, but they seldom did, and the consequence was a management system that was seldom operated in the manner defined by the procedural documents. Our approach from the outset was to ‘map’ the processes prior to documenting them – a simple task you might think. We began this project by looking for as many individual views of each operational process as we could discover, and creating the process map through a series of individual meetings with these people. We found one ‘absolute of process mapping’, and this is that the farther you go from the individuals who personally do the work, the less anyone actually understands about how the organization works. We consider this method of mapping to be a key activity because it establishes what actually happens. From here it is possible to determine if that is what needs to happen, and can it be improved.

Critical Path Mapping with Activity Network Diagrams

The activity network diagram is a method of displaying the timelines of all the various subtasks that are involved in any project. By doing this, the total task duration and the earliest and latest start and finish times for each task are also calculated and displayed. In addition to showing which subtasks are critical to on-time task completion, the activity network diagram can help determine where extra effort to speed a subtask will have the greatest payoff to overall speed.

The activity network diagram has had a relatively long history, dating back to the 1930s. In the 1950s, the technique emerged as the Program Evaluation Research Technique (PERT) and as the Critical Path Method (CPM). There are several ways to represent the output of the PERT/CPM process.

The method called the activity-on-arrow or, more simply, the arrow diagram will be reviewed in this article. An arrow diagram treats numbered nodes as instantaneous stop/start points for activities. The activities themselves are considered to take place on the arrows connecting the nodes.

The Lazy Way To Remember Self Improvement

One of the biggest problems that people have with their self improvement efforts is simply that they forget to practice whatever techniques they are supposed to be practicing in order to improve their lives.

The truth of the matter is that you are so used to living your life in a certain way that you often forget to take the appropriate measures to effect long-term positive changes.

Back before the days of computer-generated task lists and automated telephone reminders, people used to tie a piece of yarn around their finger in order to remember that they were supposed to do something. It was a crude, but effective technique.

These days, our daily list of activities is so huge that in order to utilize the yarn technique, we would all run around looking like a blanket or a scarf that was in the process of being created!

An easier to use (and more fashionable) technique is to simply associate things that are in your life with whatever it is that you are supposed to remember to do. Then, every time you come across your associated experience, you will remember to take part in a certain self improvement technique.
