New York City Schools Include Charters

Written by funker on September 2, 2010 – 3:17 pm

There have been many instances over the past 20 years or so where people have been so unhappy about the schools that they have decided to step up and do something about it. In response to this discontent, charter schools have been formed. For many New York City Schools families, charters appear to be the way to go.

Virtually anyone concerned with the state of New York City Schools can open a charter school. Parents, teachers, principals (whether they are from public New York City Schools or private ones), community leaders, philanthropists and nonprofit organizations are all examples of the types of folks who open charter schools in response to a perceived lack in quality public education.

But what is a charter school, anyway? Most people have heard about them, but are unclear or confused as to what they are, exactly. Charter schools are created by a contract (or “charter”) with the New York City Schools system. They are held to the same standards as more traditional public schools, but operate with a greater autonomy than regular schools within the system. The purpose of the charter school is to offer new resources, personnel and ideas to education, as well as to give the families of New York City Public Schools a greater choice.

Is Abolishing Tamil Schools the Solution?

Written by funker on September 1, 2010 – 3:16 pm

In the last couple of weeks there have been a good deal of interesting and important comments made on the Tamil/Indian Malaysian community. The guiding thread in all these comments has been the problems faced by the community, the causes of the problems within the community and suggestions of corrective measures. Watson Road Tamil School, Port Klang.

The most dramatic problem that took a lot of space in the mainstream media and caught a lot people’s attention recently was about the menace of gangsterism in the community.

If one surveys the various comments carefully, three causes for the problems of the Tamil Malaysian community come to mind. These causes are economic and political marginalisation; Tamil cinema; and Tamil schools.

No benefits

Many middle- and upper-middle class Tamil/Indian Malaysians hold a view that Tamil schools are practically useless. Students in Tamil schools do not benefit either educationally or economically. And, worse, Tamil schools have become a hotbed for nurturing and sustaining vices and gangsterism.

So why maintain an institution that does not do any good for the Tamil Malaysian community and generally embarrasses the Indian community. Their solution: Get rid of Tamil schools.

Is A High School Diploma Really Necessary

Written by funker on August 29, 2010 – 3:18 pm

You may be amazed at the number of career doors a high school diploma can open for you. It is true that a high school diploma will fetch you numerous great job offers. In a world, which is becoming increasingly competitive, possessing even the best skills is not good enough without a high school diploma. Today there are vast numbers of youngsters who have got the skills suited for many higher positions but they are deprived of them for not having a high school diploma. Though you may feel you have much greater potential than the person next door, in reality you may be working in a much lower position and earning far less just because you don’t possess a high school diploma whereas your neighbor does.

Challenging circumstances of life or financial problems sometimes force people to drop out of school leaving their high school education incomplete. Though most of them manage to land a job, sooner or later they realize they have got stuck in their career and have stopped growing professionally. They continue to stagnate helplessly in the same position for years without a promotion. To their frustration, a new employee with a high school diploma grabs a higher position in the same organization and progresses fast receiving one promotion after another. You may find this to be unfair but this is the trend of the job market where only a well-qualified person is considered to be knowledgeable and able to handle the job responsibilities efficiently.

Getting the Latestt Back to School Fashions

Written by funker on August 28, 2010 – 3:21 pm

You don’t have to be going back to school at the beginning of the school year to find great back to school fashions. You can get back to school fashions all year long. When it’s Tuesday, you will be going back to school on Wednesday, right? Why wait till after the school year ends to buy back to school fashions for the next year? It just doesn’t make sense.

In fact, the best time to buy back to school fashions is after the back to school season is over. This is because the back to school fashions that are left over at the retailers will have to go on sale in order to get rid of them and make room for the new fashions that have come in. So you not only get the current back to school fashions at a great price, but you are there just in time for the newest back to school fashions to hit the shelf before all those other schoolmates find them.

Find a Reputable Tefl School Abroad

Written by funker on August 27, 2010 – 3:17 pm

We’ve all heard the rumors. Schools that refuse to pay, schools that work you like a Trojan, even schools that expect you to pay them! There are a lot of crummy language schools out there and you’ll want to avoid them like the plague, here’s how to do it…

Turn the tables: A TEFL interview is as much about you finding out if the school is right for you as it is about the school finding out if you’re right for it. Prepare some questions before the interview and make sure you ask them. You can find out a lot about a schools approach to teachers by asking a couple of simple questions. For example…

Does the school only hire qualified TEFL teachers? Does the school perform regular teacher assessments to ensure teaching quality? Does the school follow a set syllabus?  Does the school encourage student feedback?  Does the school have regular tests to assess student progress?

Why Children Need to Learn to Cook in School

Written by funker on August 26, 2010 – 3:17 pm

The steady rise in a number of nations` weight gains amongst their populations has heard the alarm bells ringing at what many describe as an obesity epidemic. It is generally agreed that something must be done to put a halt to the overweight problem, otherwise the cost to health and life itself will be staggering.

A public education campaign by New York city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene – five advertisements, which have been posted in 1,000 subway cars – struck a variety of themes. It was designed to make commuters aware of what unhealthy eating can do to the body, as well as showing the number of calories contained in example dishes.

Childhood obesity in Europe is growing at an alarming rate and is accelerating rapidly.

In 2005, 14 million children were categorised as overweight or obese with an estimated 400,000 children entering this category every year. In 2007, the number has risen to 22 million.

There are serious health consequences for obese children now, and as they grow up.

Around 20,000 obese children have type-2 diabetes, over a million obese children are likely to show signs for cardiovascular diseases, and over 1.4 million may have early stages of liver disorder.

NCLB Program Should Take Its Cue from Dallas Schools

Written by funker on August 24, 2010 – 3:18 pm

Failure to educate our country’s most disadvantaged students is the most glaring and abiding social and moral problem of the United States. For nearly 20 years, our nation has worked to improve our schools and student achievement levels. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act was to be the answer to this dilemma by holding all schools accountable for student performance using high-stakes testing.

The error in thinking is the belief that the NCLB test ratings are fair and accurate. The system does not factor out the disadvantages and/or advantages of wealth and demographics, creating an inequity in the rating of schools. Low-income schools must provide programs, such as preschool, tutoring, remedial classes, and bilingual services, to their students, as well as the cost of more administration required by the state and federal grants that make up the largest percentage of their budget. Wealthier schools that primarily depend upon local funding (generally from property taxes) for their budget have few government constraints, few low-income students requiring special programs, and flexibility in how their budget is used. This means wealthier schools can provide more educational opportunities and enhancements (i.e. access to technology, fine arts and music, extracurricular activities, teacher professional training and improvements, and teacher administrative support) that impoverished schools cannot afford.
